# Position Summary Information## Department DescriptionFacilities Planning and Design is comprised of design professionals who are responsible for the planning, design and management of all capital improvement projects. The projects include new buildings, repairs and renovation of existing buildings, major campus infrastructure, interior design, open space improvements and preservation of historic properties. This position manages the planning and design of new buildings, repairs and renovations of existing buildings, additions, major infrastructure and open space improvements. The position works with project users, facilities committees, architects and engineers, North Carolina State Agencies, permitting agencies, contractors, inspectors, and others to assure that the authorized design and construction projects are accomplished in accordance with the University?s approved guidelines, master plans, policies, and procedures. Interprets, facilitates, and assists in development of policies, methods and procedures relating to planning and design activities; ensures projects conform to established budgets, schedules, and project modifications are carried out in a timely manner; prepares and obtains authorization for budgets and maintains cost analysis data for projects and current schedule of project?s design and construction phases; and performs related duties as required.## Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsBachelor?s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment and one year of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Licensed to practice architecture or landscape architecture by the North Carolina Board of Architecture or the North Carolina Board of Landscape Architects. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.## Essential Skills, Knowledge and AbilitiesAbility to manage and coordinate the design process for major capital projects (over $500,000). Ability to provide guidance to consulting design professionals. Ability to assess programmatic needs for user group and evaluate projects on compliance to the campus development plan principles. Ability to provide technical expertise in the development of budget, schedule, and program statements. Technical architectural knowledge of building design; knowledge of cost estimating; project management skills; effective communication skills including verbal and written.## Preferred QualificationsThe Successful Candidate should possess: an extensive knowledge of building design, building systems, and the construction industry; a knowledge of project management essentials; a minimum of five-years related experience; and the ability to build consensus among divergent groups.
