Including the Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory (CHANL) and the graduate program in material sciences, Applied Physical Sciences has united numerous scientific entities on campus to further its mission of finding interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems. Its newest endeavor, BeAM (Be A Maker), is a university-wide initiative that incorporates Making into research, education, and entrepreneurship. BeAM is comprised of several spaces, including a makerspace in Hanes Art Center and a 3,400 square foot Makerspace in Murray Hall, both of which serve the entire UNC community. Position Description The Kern Engineering Education Network (KEEN) Program Coordinator will play a lead role in administering the design and launch of an entrepreneurially minded learning-based engineering program at UNC-Chapel Hill. The KEEN program coordinator will take the lead in administering all aspects of the APS KEEN Family Foundation grant, including program management, assessment, reporting, and outreach. Responsibilities will include working with the Applied Physical Sciences Director of Undergraduate Services (DUS) to administer KEEN faculty learning communities (FLCs) and provide one-on-one consulting for faculty to integrate entrepreneurially minded learning (EML)-based activities into courses. The KEEN program coordinator will execute and report the goals of the KEEN-EMERGE (Entrepreneurially Minded Engineering Resource Group) program and other related programs, including the planning, logistics, and communication for the annual KEEN-EMERGE meeting. Program success will require working closely with the APS Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) to establish relationships with personnel at academic institutions who are members of KEEN-EMERGE. Managing KEEN-EMERGE will include establishing and maintaining a database of program materials, documenting and reporting to appropriate stakeholders lessons learned from KEEN institution site visits and other programming, and supporting faculty who attend KEEN conferences. The program coordinator will oversee the APS/EML faculty learning community (FLC) - a faculty development program, working closely with the APS faculty and DUS to (1) ensure that EML-based methods are incorporated into all courses taught by APS faculty, (2) guide the logistics, planning, and communications for the APS faculty development program, (3) develop a collaborative platform to disseminate and share information, (4) support faculty to develop and disseminate KEEN cards. An understanding of the current campus Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) FLCs will be important to apply best practices towards developing, supporting, assessing and reporting the APS/EML faculty development program. The role will serve as the liaison to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, when appropriate. Program assessment and reporting are important aspects of this position. The KEEN program coordinator will work collaboratively with APS faculty, staff and the DUS to develop and apply appropriate metrics and assessment tools to understand (1) effectiveness of the APS/EML FLC to support and develop faculty EML practices, (2) success incorporating EML into APS courses, (3) impact to learning in these courses, and (4) impact on the faculty teaching experience. A database of KEEN-EMERGE program materials will need to be established and maintained, including content from KEEN-EMERGE annual meetings. The program coordinator will document, curate, and report out to appropriate stakeholders the content learned from the six site visits of APS faculty to KEEN institutions. The KEEN program coordinator will support the planning and coordination of at least six site visits to KEEN institutions. Successful site visits will require the development of appropriate supporting documentation to communicate the goals of the Applied Sciences undergraduate program and the APS department. The program coordinator will develop and implement a communications strategy to engage APS and other campus faculty and leadership with the goals and ongoing progress of the entrepreneurially-minded learning-based curriculum. The KEEN program coordinator will lead the development of a final KEEN-EMERGE case study to document the process, metrics, lessons learned, etc. as important considerations to develop a new undergraduate engineering curriculum. This will include identifying, gathering, and documenting relevant success metrics, describing the historical context for developing APS as a department, documenting processes to establish a new undergraduate engineering curriculum, and compiling lessons learned from participating in these processes. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Experience coordinating, organizing, and implementing, programs and events. Experience in program assessment. Strong communications skills with the ability to express ideas clearly in written and oral communications. Preferred Qualifications Planning skills and the ability to apply strategic thinking.
