Job Summary

The Pharmacy Manager for Compounding & Perioperative Services is accountable for the leadership, strategic direction, and day-to-day operations of the Sterile Products Area (SPA), Special Formulations (SF), Perioperative Pharmacy Satellite, and Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) Pharmacy workroom. The Pharmacy Manager will exercise leadership responsibility in order to meet the needs of patients, providers, nurses, other customers, and pharmacy staff in a manner consistent with UNC Health's mission, values, and standards of behavior.

This Pharmacy Manager works very closely with the leaders of Central Inpatient Pharmacy, Pharmacy Automation & Technology, Pediatric Services, Cancer Hospital Infusion Pharmacy, Hillsborough Inpatient Pharmacy, Acute Care Clinical Services, and Compounding Services at Shared Services Center, among others, in order to carry out this mission. The Pharmacy Manager will report to the Assistant Director of Pharmacy for Acute Care Operations at UNC Medical Center. Direct reports include lead pharmacists, pharmacy technician supervisors, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians (direct and indirect reports include approximately 70 people and 50 FTE).

Scheduled Work Hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Days, Nights/Weekends PRN, On-Call Rotation)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads the development of processes necessary for the smooth operation of areas of responsibility. Anticipates needs for pharmacy clinical and operations services and assumes a leadership role in meeting those needs.
  • Leads and nurtures individual team members to meet performance and behavioral expectations and acts independently to address, mediate, and resolve personnel issues within areas of oversight.
  • Provides program level management as well as shift specific management in areas of responsibility. Performs supervisory responsibilities through selection, training, evaluating, counseling, and corrective action of staff.
  • Demonstrates active leadership internal and external to the Department of Pharmacy as an active member of pharmacy department committees, multidisciplinary hospital committees and/or professional association committees.
  • Proactively seeks opportunities to improve performance and customer satisfaction and implements processes to minimize waste. Builds and maintains relationships with key individuals and solicits feedback regarding pharmacy performance. Develops policies and standard operating procedures and/or clinical decision support in response to Clinical, Operational, Financial drug use needs. Prior to implementation of new policies and guidelines, ensures that appropriate communication and staff education have occurred.
  • Provides clinical and operational pharmacist services to patients as required, staffing a minimum of two shifts per month for the first year to become the expert on all operational components within areas of oversight.
  • Teaches students, residents and new pharmacy staff and participates in scholarly activities.
  • Ensures and audits compliance with federal, state, local and institutional policies, procedures, standards and regulations.
  • Supports the development of budgets and financial stewardship goals. Monitors financial and productivity performance and addresses variances in area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates clinical or operational expertise through publications, presentations, committee activities, and/or program development related to improvement of patient care and advancement of pharmacy practice.

Preferences

  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited Health-System Pharmacy Administration (HSPA) residency (PGY1-2), Pharmacy Practice (PGY1) Residency, Specialty (PGY2) Residency, or equivalent work experience.
  • Completion of a graduate degree (MS, MBA, MHA) or equivalent work experience.
  • Board certification through the Board of Pharmacy Specialists (BPS).

Education Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

Eligible for licensure as a Registered Pharmacist in NC. Licensure from NC Board of Pharmacy required within 6 months of orientation date or sooner if required for operations.

Professional Experience Requirements:

Three years pharmacist experience or equivalent required.
