Job Description:
Position Summary The Department of Neurosurgery at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ( UNC ) invites
applications for a fellowship-trained Stereotactic and Functional
Neurosurgeon to join our growing multidisciplinary program. The
successful candidate will join a dynamic academic environment
comprising 12 neurosurgeons with expertise across subspecialties,
supported by robust clinical, research, and educational
infrastructure within the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health.
Neurosurgery Services: Our neurosurgery services include treatment
for aneurysms and cerebrovascular disease, brain tumor treatment,
epilepsy and functional neurosurgery, spine and head trauma,
hydrocephalus, pituitary and skull base surgery, spinal
neurosurgery, pediatric and fetal neurosurgery. The department has
expanded in recent years with new neurosurgical faculty, including
surgeon-scientists, master clinicians, and an extraordinarily
talented multimedia medical illustration team. There is a new
neurosurgical outpatient center at the ACC . UNC Health has
acquired the latest technology, including the LITT , Robot, and
high/low-intensity focused ultrasound ( HIFU / LIFU ), and the
department has established a new peripheral nerve and spinal
oncology program. The department generated $2.52M in grant funding
and received $2.95M in philanthropic support. In the last few
years, the department has improved its standing in Blue Ridge and
US News & World Report rankings. Primary Responsibilities: Provide
surgical care for patients with epilepsy and movement disorders, in
close collaboration with neurologists specializing in these areas.
Participate actively in the education and mentorship of residents,
fellows, and medical students. Contribute to the department’s
research mission, focusing on understanding the mechanisms of
neurological disorders, the biologic and physiologic basis of
neurosurgical interventions, and advancing surgical techniques for
epilepsy and functional disorders. Engage in interdisciplinary
collaborations across UNC’s neuroscience, imaging, and engineering
communities. A research support package including start-up
resources and protected time will be provided in proportion to the
candidate’s experience, academic achievements, and funding history.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience Demonstrated
expertise in the evaluation and surgical treatment of epilepsy.
Demonstrated expertise in microelectrode-guided deep brain
stimulation ( DBS ). Expertise also in asleep DBS preferred.
Evidence of a strong clinical track record and commitment to
academic productivity. For senior candidates, a record of
extramural funding, innovation, and impactful publications is
highly desirable.
