Job Description:

This is a nine (9) month tenure track position beginning in August 2019. The successful candidate will join a strong faculty in the elementary education and middle grades education program within the school of teaching and learning at one of the nation's most beautiful and dynamic universities. In a program that highly values collaboration and diversity, the successful candidate's primary teaching responsibilities will be to teach courses in elementary and middle grades social studies methods with a particular focus on diversity, equity, and culturally relevant pedagogy. The successful candidate will also be required to teach other courses as assigned. The successful candidate must: assess and evaluate student learning outcomes, skills, and dispositions; supervise teacher candidates in field experiences and internships; engage in service to the institution, region, and profession; and clearly articulate a strong scholarly agenda and conduct research that focuses on relevant topics in education. The successful candidate will be encouraged to provide local, state, and national service to the public schools and to the profession. In addition, the successful candidate must be willing to teach students in both on campus and distance education formats. Preference will be given to candidates who can work collaboratively across disciplines to address the education of students living in diverse environments and can embrace the Boyer Model of Scholarship. The successful candidate should document: earned doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction, Social Studies Education, Multicultural/Diversity Education or a related field in education from an accredited institution by the appointment date. The successful candidate must have: 1. A minimum of three years of successful public school teaching experience at the elementary and/or middle grades level and eligibility for teacher licensure in North Carolina; 2. Evidence of ability to and/or experience with teaching courses in social studies methods in the elementary and middle grades; 3. Experience teaching at the college or university level; 4. Experience working with elementary- and middle-level schools; 5. Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds; and 6. Evidence of ability to conduct research related to current or developing agenda.
