Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The mission of the School of
Social Work is to advance equity, transform systems, and improve
lives. The School s curriculum supports the mission and recognizes
the uniqueness of the region served, including concerns for
disadvantaged, vulnerable, and oppressed individuals, families, and
communities. Classes provide rigorous and evidence-based content,
and give students the opportunity to explore theory, learn
intervention skills and engage in challenging dialogue with
colleagues. The School works to become the leading school of social
work for impact generating knowledge with powerful and positive
consequences. The School of Social Work offers M.S.W. and Ph.D.
degrees. Dual degrees are offered in Law, Public Health, Public
Administration, and Divinity (with Duke University). The faculty
members of the School of Social Work have strong collaborative
relationships with many campus units such as the Schools of
Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Law, Government, Education, and
the Department of City and Regional Planning as well as University
Centers and Institutes such as the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health
Services Research, the Carolina Population Center, the Center for
Developmental Sciences, Frank Porter Graham Child Development
Institute, and the Carolina Aging Network. We also maintain dynamic
relationships with community agencies, state and federal

please visit our website at Position Summary The School of Social
Work (SSW) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
invites applications for two (2) tenure-track faculty positions
(nine-month appointments) with primary expertise in aging, older
adults, long-term care, and related health and health disparities.
Consistent with the School s mission to advance equity, transform
systems, and improve lives, we seek scholars whose research
addresses the experiences of older adults and the policies,
programs, and services that shape their lives. Competitive
applicants will demonstrate a strong record, or clear potential,
for externally funded research, peer-reviewed publication, and
excellence in teaching. Successful candidates will develop and
maintain an independent, externally funded research agenda focused
on aging, older adults, long-term care, and related health and
disparities while contributing to the School s MSW and PhD
programs. The standard tenure-track teaching load is four courses
per academic year, with opportunities for course buy-outs based on
research funding, and faculty are expected to engage fully in
research, teaching, and service to the School, University,
profession, and community. This position has a standard
distribution of effort that includes 67% teaching and instruction,
16.5% research, and 16.5% service and community engagement. The
faculty members academic home will be the School of Social Work,
with extensive opportunities to collaborate across disciplines
including but not limited to public health, medicine, nursing,
psychology, data science, and policy. One or both positions may be
affiliated with the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services
Research Program on Aging, Chronic Illness, and Long-term Care, and
the national Center for Excellence in Assisted Living, including in
a leadership capacity. We are especially interested in candidates
who bring interdisciplinary or community-engaged perspectives that
inform innovative interventions, service delivery models, or policy
solutions for older adults. Candidates with exceptional
qualifications may have access to designated research funds.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Doctoral degree in a
field that addresses the well-being of older adults, including
social sciences, gerontology, and health services. Research and
publications that address the well-being of older adults. Preferred
Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Degrees in Social Work
and a strong background in gerontology are highly valued but not
required. Candidates should demonstrate an exceptional record of
externally funded research, publications, and teaching, all in
relation to their career stage; preference is on research,
publications, and teaching related to long-term care services and
supports for older adults. Special Instructions Candidates should
